Create a useful site which allows
- the student to move freely inside and outside the site
- the student the opportunity to utilize the resources on the
Internet in study
- the student to "turn in" work easily and quickly
- the instructor the opportunity to express his ideas
- the instructor to be inclusive of resources on the Internet
- I have not incorporated many pictures because of site size
limitations, loading times required, and the article "Where's The Beef".
Create a site which allowed for the developer the greatest
amount of flexibility in using the material is a wide variety of setting. See "Chunking"
Thoughts on WWW
Education
- 3WE incorporates the information using some of the WWW
information retrieval techniques and traditional education methods.
- You will be exposed to many types of information.
- You will be required to develop discrimination skills in
determining the accuracy of information you discover on the WWW.
- As with all courses the most important question is WHAT DO
YOU WANT OUT OF THE COURSE? All the greatest technology, instructors, resources, and
facilities are dependent upon your readiness and willingness to learn and discover.

Borrowing Software
Students should be very careful about STEALING SOFTWARE,
often called borrowing. The individuals who create the software deserve having their
services reimbursed. In the Old Testament the poor were allowed to glean in the fields.
The trouble with gleaning software is you must take the "WHOLE FIELD." We have
no right to consider software developers as generous as Boaz.
Planning and
development criteria <Index>
- Many, many hours of thinking, wondering, reading,
experimenting
- Getting information into "chunks"
I had information which needed to be used in several
different settings. Therefore, after a massive amount of thinking, scribbling, and
development and testing, I chose to separate the material into small "churks."
- Have a CENTRAL DESK which will allow the student to jump to
all the various aspects of the class.
- Each week's LESSON separate. The student will jump to the
various "chunks" from this screen
- Each week's ASSIGNMENT separate. The student can jump to the
assignment from several screens.
- The assignments are on the bottom panel so that the student
can study, explore in the MAIN SCREEN while answering Homework questions in the bottom
panel.
- Use SUBMIT to all the students to easily and effortlessly as
possible "turn in" their work to the instructor
- The student will be able to print their assignments and at
the end of class have a resource for later reference.
- The DIRECTORY STRUCTURE
- Lessons and assignments
- wk01 = the weeks study outline
- wk01a = the weeks assignments
- wk010 = the weeks overview
- Glossary of Terms
- gl__ = start
- gla_ ...glz = the individual categories
- gla0001 = could be used for more detailed information about
the term or this information could be located in LECTURES
- Lectures - the heart of the "chunking"
- organize by number 0000-9999
- with each number representing a separate, discrete bit of
information

creating this site <Index>
SOFTWARE
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 (Free download available
from www.microsoft.com)
- Microsoft Internet Assistant 2.0z for Microsoft Word 95(Free
download available from www.microsoft.com)
- Microsoft Office Professional for Windows 95
- Microsoft FrontPage Beta 2.0
We used Microsoft Internet Explorer (the web browser) and
Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word 95 mainly because they are FREE. Most of the reviews
that I have read rate Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explore about the same. PC
Magazine October 22, 1996 says, "The true winner of the browser wars is the one who
uses both Netscape Navigator 3.0 and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 to access the web.

AUSTIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE EDUCATION CATALYST CENTER
Many THANKS TO the Austin Community College Education Catalyst Center's
"Future Is Now" seminar in August 1996. This meeting along with the director
provided
- invaluable assistance and direction
- opened my mind to the possibilities of teaching using the
WWW
- provided needed technical insight
- gave that little push that was needed

CGI ACTION FORM
After much searching I found this site at the University of
Kentucky which allowed a "novice" to create a form for students to send in their
assignment for the Internet class.
- Many, many grateful thanks to John Roberts (johnr@pop.uky.edu) who made the Internet classes I
teach much more productive.

INTERNET SITES
Many are not creating and enhancing sites. More and more
beauty.. More and more snow. More and more deep snow to plow through. .More and deeper
graphics. I am certain that in time I will create my own "snow making machine."
BUT, for now the deeper, prettier mentality only frustrates me with my 33.6 and a very
busy WWW.

NETIZENS ASK, "WHERE'S THE BEEF?"
- Yankelovich's second annual Cybercitizen survey has bad news
for Internet entrepreneurs: "There are widespread complaints about reliability, value
and usefulness," says a Yankelovich managing partner. "People are looking for a
reason to stay." The survey reports a drop in average online time from 16 to 12 hours
a month. Survey respondents reported that the online services they value the most provide
frequent updates, quick downloads, and fast searches. The least useful sites included
pictures, sound and bulletin boards. (Tampa Tribune 30 Sep 96 B&F5) From Edupage

CONTENT REALLY IS KING
- The massive amount of information that's now being generated
may appear to make the individual content provider less important, says a Walt Disney
Imagineering VP, but it actually means that branded content becomes much more important.
In the Information Age, "more information is worth less. There's too much; you can't
swallow it all. Content providers that will be successful will be the ones that make the
content mean something." (Broadcasting & Cable 23 Sep 96 p54)

GOV'T DOCUMENTS TO BE MADE
AVAILABLE ELECTRONICALLY
- Congress has passed legislation directing federal agencies
to make their records available in electronic format and to make better use of the
Internet to distribute some government information. The legislation was tied to efforts to
improve government response to Freedom of Information Act requests. "These changes
will make access to government information easier," says the bill's sponsor, Senator
Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.). "The American people have a right to know how their government
works, or doesn't work." (Chronicle of Higher Education 27 Sep 96 A30)
