The 70 years of captivity was a punishment from God upon the people of Judah. Several stories related to this period of time: Daniel, Esther, Ezra, and Nehemiah.
While in Exile the Babylonians were defeated by the Medo-Persian armies. The handwriting on the wall which Daniel interpreted occurred right before the enemy conquered the Babylonians.
Darius implemented a policy of returning captives to their home land. The King provided letters of introduction and funding for the returning Hebrews.
After returning, conflict existed between the people who had lived in Israel during the captivity.
The nation never returned to the previous splendor and power.
