PANORAMIC VIEW:
Moses was perhaps the most influential individual in Hebrew
history. He began with a group of slaves and ended with a nation. His life is divided into
three forty year periods
First Forty
- Parents saved his life in a basket in the Nile River.
- Raised by mother for a time then by a princess in Egypt.
- Killed an Egyptian and fled to Midian.
Second Forty
- Lived in desert with Jethro, priest of Midian, and married
Zipporah Jethro's daughter.
- "I AM"
called Moses to deliver the Hebrew slaved in Egypt at a burning bush.
- Moses had four reasons he could not do the task each of
which "I AM" responded to:
- He was a nobody and no one would listen to him. God said the
He would be with Moses.
- If they do not listen to me, what will I do then. God
demonstrated His power by turning Moses' walking stick into a snake.
- I am not a good speaker. God said Go! I AM will be with you.
- Lord, just send someone else. God became angry and sent
Aaron, Moses' brother, to be the spokesman.
- Moses and brother Aaron return to Egypt where they confront
Pharaoh.
- 10 Plagues are sent on Pharaoh and the Egyptians because
they refused to allow the Hebrews to leave.
- Passover instituted
The placement of the events with Pharaoh may be in either
the Second Forty or the Third Forty Years.
Third Forty
- Hebrews leave for Promise Land with the "wealth of the
Egyptians."
- Cross Red Sea.
- After three months of "griping and complaining"
about food, water, and safety they reach Mount Sinai, Mount of God.
- Manna begins which will feed them for the next forth years.
- Moses and people receive
- Laws
- Instructions for Tabernacle
- After two years at Sinai, when the Tabernacle is completed,
they "head north."
- Twelve spies sent to explore the Promise Land.
- The people reject the "minority committee's"
advice (Joshua and Caleb) and refuse to enter Promise Land
- The Lord punished that generation by causing them to wander
for 38 years.
- At end of 38 years Moses and the whole generation dies
except for Joshua and Caleb.
