My first participation in a Bible Reading Marathon was in the First Baptist Church in Brady, Texas when the youth group and adults read the whole New Testament in August 1971. See &quot;Son Have a Bible Reading Marathon&quot;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium; \"><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Brady, Texas &quot;Whole Bible&quot; Reading\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ministryserver.com\/brmnet\/brady lasta.jpg\" style=\"cursor: default; float: left; width: 268px; height: 128px; \" \/>In the early fall while sitting at the Joiner&#39;s Restaurant in Mayfield, Kentucky several students and one faculty member from the Mid-Continent Bible College decided to try to have a Bible Reading Marathon (BRM) on the Court Square in Mayfield, Kentucky. After some planning and preparation, we began reading the New Testament on the Courthouse steps on a Friday night after the high school football game. During this first reading in public for us, several hundred individuals participated in the reading or listened.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium; \"><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">During the next year or so, we participated in BRMs in Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas. The entire Bible was read on the Brady, Texas Court Square in summer of 1972.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium; \"><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">I would like to share some of my memories and thoughts about the Bible Reading Marathons in which I was privileged to participate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<dl style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); \">\n<dt><strong><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Who reads&nbsp;<\/font><\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium; \"><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">We encouraged everyone to participate in the reading. If my recollection is correct, reader ranged in age from a 5 or 6 year old girl in Tennessee to a 91 year old lady in Brady.<\/span><\/span><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium; \"><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"123\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ministryserver.com\/brmnet\/brady03.jpg\" width=\"131\" \/>&nbsp;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"171\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ministryserver.com\/brmnet\/brady01.jpg\" width=\"153\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<dl style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium; \">\n<dt><strong><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Reading Format<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/dt>\n<dd><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Reading is verbal, out-loud.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">We read from Matthew 1:1 through the last verse in Revelation. Generally, everyone who was present at the end of the BRM read the last chapter together in unison.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">No one person read on and on.&nbsp;<strong><u>ONE PRIMARY GOAL<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp;was to have as many different people read as possible. When there were a large number of people wanting to read, the reader may read only a few verses. However, during the early morning hours when there were few people around, the reader might several chapters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">BRM was never a contest to see how fast or how long one person could read.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">There was no preaching or comments on passages. We insisted that everyone just read. In order to receive permission to read on courthouse squares, we guaranteed the appropriate authorities that there would be only reading.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><b>How long did it take to read<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/dt>\n<dd><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">New Testament 20-23 hours<br \/>\n\t\tWhole Bible about 72 hours<\/span><\/span><\/dd>\n<dt><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>Where we read<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/dt>\n<dd><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">County Courthouse steps<br \/>\n\t\tBank parking lots<br \/>\n\t\tCollege BSU<\/span><\/span><\/dd>\n<dd><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">In Churches<br \/>\n\t\tShopping Mall<\/span><\/span><\/dd>\n<dt><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><a name=\"Who supported our BRMs\"><font face=\"Arial\"><strong>Who supported our BRMs<\/strong><\/font><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/dt>\n<dd><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Many churches and individuals met the wide variety of needs we encountered in the various BRMs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Generally, we felt that our purpose was to support individuals and\/or churches that were interested in having a public reading of God&#39;s Word.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">No money was raised at the readings.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<dt><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><a name=\"What happened at the reading besides reading\"><font face=\"Arial\"><strong>What happened at the reading besides reading<\/strong><\/font><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/dt>\n<dd><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">People sat around and listened<br \/>\n\t\tNew Testaments were distributed<br \/>\n\t\tWitnessing<br \/>\n\t\tVisiting<br \/>\n\t\tEating (at some reading the churches provided food)<\/span><\/span><\/dd>\n<dd><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Some sleeping in the early morning hours<\/span><\/span><\/dd>\n<dt><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><a name=\"Sign-up Bible\"><font face=\"Arial\"><strong>Sign-up Bible<\/strong><\/font><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/dt>\n<dd><span style=\"font-size:12px;\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">At each reading the reader signed the &quot;sign-up Bible&quot; next to the passage(s) they read. We sometimes presented this Bible to the county judge or the church where the reading took place.
