Dear MK,
You have responded saying you would be interested in assisting with the
planning and implementation of a Brasilian MK Reunion. I need some help
with making a decision concerning where and when to have this next
reunion.
Here are the things I would like you to consider:
1. Interaction, Inc whose Executive Director is David Pollock. He is
the person who coined the term Third Culture Kid and has done a lot of
research on this topic. This organization is planning MK World Reunion
2000 June 8 - 11, 2000 (Th - Sun) in Chicago. I have corresponded with
them. Here are copies of these e-mails.
Attention Al Gurley
Dear Al or To Whom It May Concern,
I am involved in the organization of two different MK reunions for the
year 2000. I saw your blurb about the above and was wondering if these
two could in some way be incorporated into the one you are organizing.
What are the exact dates of the Reunion? Who are you targeting? What is
the cost for the Reunion? What are the accommodations? What is the cost
of accommodations? Are meals included? If not are there readily
available eating establishments close by? What about entertainment for
the non MK spouse and children? Are there facilities and activities they
could enjoy while the MK is with the other MK's. Is there a place for
soccer/volleyball to be played? How far from the airport? Would a car
have to rented? Would there be time for gatherings of smaller groups
such as the boarding school I attended in Ceres, Go, Brasil (Escola
Bandeirante) and the larger group of Southern Baptist MK's from Brazil?
Anxiously expecting your reply,
Dear Naomi,
Al Gurley forwarded your July 9 e-mail re: World Reunion 2000 on to me.
Although all details are not yet finalized, I'll try to answer your
questions as best as I can.
1) The dates are June 8 - 11, 2000 (Th - Sun)
2) The conference is geared towards adult TCKs (I.e. your alumni). They
must be college age or older.
3) The conference is being held at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL.
They are providing housing and meals.
4) Featured speakers are John Kregel, Bill Taylor and Steve Green (who
will also be doing a concert)
5) At this point we do not have a cost nailed down. This will largely
depend on Moody's cost. Food and Lodging will be separate from the
conference, as some adult TCKs will want to commute.
6) We are encouraging monocultural spouses to attend all events with TCKs
as this will enable them to better understand their TCK/MK spouse. We
are not providing child care, as that would make the cost far too high.
7) Besides the General Sessions and workshops we have nothing else
planned. MBI has excellent sport facilities that participants will be
able to use.
8) It is every individuals responsibility to get to MBI. Again for
economic reasons we can't pick people up at airports, bus and train
stations. O'Hare and Midway are the two closest airports. I think they
are about an hour or so by car.
9)On the second day (Fr) we are setting aside the entire afternoon for
overseas schools (like yours) to have their own reunions. We are leaving
structure and program up to the individual schools. We will simply
provide the meeting room. On Sat. we also have the afternoon free. This
will be the day when any mission organizations, colleges, etc. can have
their own gathering if they so choose. Again we will simply provide the
room.
You can check out more info at our website at www.worldreunion2000.org
I
hope this answers your questions (at least the ones I can answer right
now). We would love to have you and your fellow TCKs be a part of our
World Reunion 2000! Let me know what you think.
I'll keep you posted as events transpire.

2. Escola Americana in Rio is having a reunion. Miami Reunion should
calendar June 23 through June 25, 2000. Thereafter, we're "rolling down
to Rio" from June 26 through July 1, 2000!!!
Okay, it's official!!! EA2000 will take place in two venues, Miami and
Rio!!!
Those who can make the Miami Reunion should calendar June 23 through June
25, 2000. Thereafter, we're "rolling down to Rio" from June 26 through
July 1, 2000!!!
Ruthie Judd and Chris were named co-organizers in Miami. Karla Redig
(with Vera Waissman's help) is the designated organizer in Rio. Others
were designated to contact class members from 1937 through 2000.
This event will come off as planned people (I'll add the organizer's
email addresses here soon)! We're hoping to get a group rate for a
flight leaving the Miami Reunion to head to the Rio Reunion, partying all
of the way down! When we get there, we hope to have very reasonable
rates for those who want to experience very affordable condo living in
Rio! You may want to make it an annual event if I can get the price
right!
Before you freak out about not being able to go to both, or either, stay
tuned for the details to follow. Negotiations are in progress to set up
group rates that are very reasonable, and for the fun you'll experience,
a real bargain. Start saving your pennies now. . . don't buy anyone
anything for Christmas, forget their birthdays, etc.

3. The Brasil missionaries are planning a reunion at Gulfshore Baptist
Assembly for Oct 11-13, with MK's coming Oct. 13-15. After much
discussion concerning trying to work out a time when the MK's could meet
with the Missionaries and due to space limitations in the previous
locations looked at, it was decided that the missionaries would meet at
the beginning of the week and the MK's could come for the weekend if we
so choose to do so. The problem with this, in my opinion is that we will
not get to see our Aunts and Uncles and families cannot have a reunion as
well, with one group leaving Friday at noon and the other arriving Friday
at noon or later.
We have just reserved Oct 11-13 for the Brazilian reunion. As far as I
know the dates of 13-15 are still available at Gulfshore. Marvelous
facilities and reasonable. It has a pool, tennis courts etc. room for
soccer. Hope you will decide to come down. Need to call Sharon Gibson at
GBA 228-452-7261 Love Aunt Carolyn S.
I have received the prices for our reunion Oct 11-13,2000. ("MKs if you
want this space it is even more vital for you as your time slot is a
weekend.) A forty dollar per person deposit will hold your space. This
will be deducted from your total bill.
This price is for two days i.e.. total bill
A units 2 single beds $88.80 each adult age 12 and up
$40.65 children ages 2-11
$ 2.00 children under two (crib fee)
C units 4 bunk beds $81.50 each adult 12 and up
$37.00 children ages 2-11
$ 2.00 babies under two
RV site $5.00 per night
$7.50 conference fee for each adult(over 12)(breaks)
$1.00 per person per day participation fee
Commuters $1.50 per person per day plus desired meals
Meals (extra) Breakfast $5.50
Lunch and Dinner$6.50
The $7.50 fee is what we are charging to take care of breaks, ice cream
etc..There are soft drink machines but no canteen facility at Gulfshore.
Last year we charged $10.00 .
The snack fee is included in the room rate, so a couple would pay $88.80
times two or a couple would pay $177.60 or $163.00 depending on their
choice of accommodations. The price for a single person in a double room
will be $88.80 or 81.50 depending on the accommodations they choose. The
four to a room is cheaper by $9.50 there are bunk beds. Less privacy
four will be sharing a bath etc. The reason for the children's prices
was because I was sending the same info to Naomi as the MKs will be
bringing their children. The A and C type rooms already have the
registration and activity fee built in. have a pretty good list by now.
This is rather long. I sure hope you can muddle through it and let me
know what your thoughts are. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
