OLD TESTAMENT TEACHER'S GUIDE
This syllabus or teacher's guide is designed to help a person
familiar with the Old Testament to present an overview of the thirtynine documents in 38
fiftyminute lectures, assuming there would be fortytwo class meetings of a MWF
class (3 credit hours) during the regular semester. The four unscheduled class meetings
would be used by the teacher for catchup, review or testing.
Most lectures will contain the following sections:
1. TEACHER'S OBJECTIVES:: These present some pertinent aspects of
the lecture which will remind the teacher of the essentials and could provide guidelines
for testing. (Letting students know the teacher's objectives at the beginning of the
lecture would help students to be alert in recording the basic elements of the lecture.)
2. TEACHER'S NOTES: These are ideas to help the instructor
anticipate and deliver the lecture. They include considerations which the teacher may or
may not choose to include in the lecture.
3. LECTURE OUTLINE: This is the material which will be presented.
After the background material (the first five lectures), each lecture on the Old Testament
books will have an abbreviated outline which can be reproduced to hand out to students or
made into an overhead transparency.
4. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: At various places before, within, or after
the lecture outline, discussion questions will help students interact with the material
and break up a pattern of teacher dominance.
5. ASSIGNMENTS:: A very important part of teaching the Old Testament
is involving students in independent study outside of class lectures. In some places,
specific text books are suggested (i.e. A Survey of the Old Testament by Andrew E.
Hill end John H. Walton, published by Zondervan). Other texts may be selected and
assignments easily adapted.
6. RESOURCES: Sometimes reference materials are suggested to help
teachers or students do further work in the area being covered in class.
7. OUTLINES OF THE OLD TESTAMENT BOOKS: Beginning with the lectures
on Genesis, an outline of each book of the Old Testament is provided at the end of the
lectures on that book These could be copied for students or reproduced as an overhead to
facilitate the lecture.
All of these materials are intended to assist rather than dictate or
inhibit. Teachers might use these materials as suggestive guides for pacing and
structuring lectures while being free to enhance and delete.
Each lecture begins with
1. the lecture number (from one to thirtyeight).
2. the lecture title, and
3. teaching objectives for that lecture.
Next, the basic content of the Old Testament lecture is on the right
side of the page with supplemental material on the left The reference numbers in the
lecture allow quick reference to appropriate commentary or discussion questions on the
left side of the same page.
Most lectures will have complete documentation at the end of the
lecture and partial information in the text.
Beginning with Genesis, each lecture is followed by a onepage
outline of the Old Testament book being covered. These pages are intended for class
handouts or overhead transparencies. You are encouraged to reproduce any of the materials
in this syllabus.
Materials were compiled by a committee comprised of Don Coleman, Jimmy Daniel, Bob Mayfield and Rick Spencer under the direction of Bill Webb. Assistance in writing and editing was provided by windy and Bill Barker, David Kemerling, Dub Pool and David Stricklin. Nancy Stamps worked diligently throughout the project in typing and formatting materials.
