1. Joseph's Dreams Told of His Family. (Gen. 37:1-36)

2. Judah's Story Told (Gen. 38:1-30)2

3. Joseph interpreted the dreams of the cupbearer and baker of Pharaoh after being thrown in prison by Potiphar. (Potiphar's wife falsely accused him of trying to sleep with her.) (Gen. 39:1-40:23)

4. Joseph interpreted Pharaoh's dreams. (Gen. 41:1-57)

Pharaoh's dreams indicated a 7-year period of plenty followed by a 7-year drought. Pharaoh placed Joseph in charge of his affairs as second in command.

B. Reunion of Jacob's Family in Egypt (Gen. 42:1-50:26)

1. The Brothers' First Visit to Egypt (Gen. 42:1-38)

3. Jacob Moved to Egypt (Gen. 46:1-50:26)

b. Jacob died in Egypt but was buried in the Cave of Machpelah where Abraham and Isaac were also buried.

c. Joseph died in Egypt and was buried there. Four centuries later, his bones were reburied in the promised land near Shechem.

The patriarchal narrative in Genesis prepares readers for the book of Exodus as the descendants of Abraham end up in Egypt. Although the Egyptians are benevolent toward Abraham's descendants at this time, this treatment would change in the centuries that followed

The patriarchal period sets the stage for Exodus experience and Mosaic covenant. (DQ#3)
